THE PROBLEM
Some research questions in acute care medicine need a different approach.
Complexity
Many disease processes in acute care medicine are complex and multifactorial. Untargeted therapies are unlikely to modify such disease processes. Devising effective therapies hinges on a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying disease.
Heterogeneity
No two patients are alike. To work optimally, or even at all, many therapies in acute care may need to be personalised. Examples include the optimal choice of blood pressure targets in surgical patients and the critically ill, as well as the optimal carbon dioxide target in brain-injured patients.
Multidisciplinarity
Some research questions span multiple disciplines and can only be effectively addressed with an integrative and translational approach. However, acute care research is fragmented into silos, with developments in one area often missed by neighbouring disciplines.
OUR VISION
We envision a new paradigm of acute care research.
Integrative
Research should be transdisciplinary and integrative, leveraging research findings from neighbouring areas.
Personalised
Acute care research should focus on better understanding disease processes in individual patients and devising targeted, personalised therapies.
Cutting-edge
Promising experimental technologies need to be safely, effectively and rapidly translated to clinical settings. For this, precision medicine data capture, processing and analysis need to become more efficient, scalable and accessible.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to advance the research and adoption of precision acute care medicine.
